Whether dreamer or realist, we all yearn for an emotional connection with the environment we create. We seek harmony in the elements surrounding our daily lives and at times, we boldly attempt to redefine them.
Your intent may be to create a sanctuary away from the outside world – or an environment that welcomes the world in and entertains it. Your inspiration may come from nature -- whether rich texture of bark or the undulating patterns on a sandy beach. Or clean lines and a minimalist style may stir in you the energy you desire.
Whatever your inspiration, whatever your design goals, remember these two guidelines as you begin:
1.) Be as clear as you can about your intention and thus
2.) Have a plan in place before you begin
Your over-arching objective may be easy to identify, for example, I love to entertain and want my home to be welcoming and fun for my guests. The real clarification comes in asking what specifically this means to you. Multiple cozy areas for quiet conversations or open spaces for lively mingling? Bold, stimulating colors or quiet hues? And how might these elements be refreshed as the seasons change?
Developing a plan is the practical side of designing with intention. A plan is results-oriented, not “item” oriented, and can help you avoid costly mistakes. In developing your plan, think about:
- Who will use the space and how it will be used
- What elements – furniture, rugs, lighting – can you keep, and what needs to go
- What is your budget and what is time frame?
