From Runway to Rugs

The line between fashion and interior design has always been thinly veiled and inspiration runs both ways.

Our most powerful design houses and furniture companies are influenced by the power of the runway. We are all related after all, by the world of Pantone and the mills driven by the latest color craze. The most popular hues transfer over into the interior design world through  rugs, fabrics, paint and wall covers. A powerhouse of a neutral, khaki  holding down the runways this year, bringing an earthy yet elegant pallet that pairs well with the new modern jewel tones. Now more than ever, neutral hues encompass more than "greige", beige and gray. The soft, unassuming backbone of color combinations has transformed and with it, neutrals have evolved. We now see eucalyptus,  moss and khaki make a play for the go-to conduit color  for connecting vibrant tones and monochromatic schemes.

The Burberry coat and Givenchy purse are shown as a perfect neutral to support fashionable trends from the runway. Khaki hues represent on the runway, from smoky olive to army green, this shade is subtle yet ultra modern. In this image, we translate to runway to rugs, and with it comes the quickstep movement of dance between fashion, art and interior design. Inspiration is everywhere so next time you have a minute, open up Vogue magazine and pop online to experiment with trend making hues. Our Mafi Signature 16 custom rug program at Mafi International, which is located at the  Seattle Design Center, allows for experimenting with trends from the runway right to your room. I created a few versions of this trend forecasting custom rug, all versions in shades of khaki, but this one looked  amazing with a mist of gray running through the luxurious wool.

Here is a concept of how the modern, trend inspired rug works in a transitional room setting.
